Duathlon is a run-bike-run event, and Powerman is “the world’s premier duathlon series” – mostly longer events.

This is a flat and relatively short (by Powerman standards) race, so I’m expecting it to be fast and furious! It will certainly be a good early-season hard race effort, after a block of mainly base training in Australia. I’d like to acquit myself honourably in the race of course (especially as I’m ITU world champion in long-course duathlon, thanks to winning Powerman Zofingen in 2014 and 2015) but because it’s so early in the season, and I won’t have much time to reduce training load before the race, it’s not my main target.
It will be exciting to race in Malaysia – a first for me! A new race always entails a certain amount of anxiety beforehand, because so much is unknown but that’s the beauty of my switch to multi-sport events, it’s creating new challenges and learning experiences all the time. It’s important to allow time at the race venue to ride (and if possible also run) the course well before race day, as the more familiar one is with the route, the better. I’m looking forward to kicking the season off.
